Let me take just a minute to tell you some other things that you might not know. Forget the fact that I have an MBA in Finance and Business Economics, that I have been in business earning profits myself for 4 years, and that many of my friends are coming to me asking for advice and guidance for their businesses.  Even So, There is a little more to the story. When my ex-husband and I split up, my income was barely adequate to support one person, let alone enough to support my two kids and me. The few hundred dollars of child support and the $131 per year (yes, per year - that isn't a typo!) in alimony helped a little, but every month was a new adventure in paying bills and juggling credit card payments and balances. For two years, as I watched my kids grow and flourish, my debt was growing and flourishing right along with them, and my quilting time went to pieces - too stressed to quilt. (If I had only known that quilting would relieve my stress . . . ) Eventually I was able to get a job making more money, but it still wasn’t enough. Five years later, with increasing debt and two kids in college, I was handed a layoff notice from the County of San Diego. Fortunately the clock ran for 3 months more. In one way, I was relieved, since I was miserable with my boss and my job. But I didn’t have many options. Transferring to a different department was possible, but would have resulted in a decrease in pay of at least 30%. The household math wasn’t working already, and with a 30% decrease in pay, I would have had to move back in with my parents. And, at 55 years old, that was the last thing I wanted to do. So I started looking around. First I looked at other companies, but I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do for somebody else. And I was sick of working at a boring job I hated, just to pay the bills. Then one day, a spam email popped into my email box. It was an ad for a program teaching how to make money online. In desperation, I decided to give it a whirl. And the whirlwind began. Within a short time, I learned how to sell on eBay. Within a few weeks, I was making a few hundred dollars a week on eBay, selling collectible matchbooks and menus. (Amazing as that sounds!) But, as you can imagine, finding collectible matchbooks and old menus isn’t like turning on a faucet and watching the water gush out. It became clear that to really make some money, I would need to invest thousands of dollars in someone’s matchbook or menu collection, then spend hundreds of hours sorting, taking pictures and then posting the auctions on eBay. Doable, to be sure. But the hourly rate was less than minimum wage I didn’t have thousands of dollars to invest in matchbooks that might not sell, and a few hundred dollars a week wasn't enough to pay for rent, let alone food, clothes, and college tuition for my kids. Then I ran into someone who talked about setting up a website to sell products in addition to selling them on eBay. That sounded like a good idea, but I didn’t know anything about setting up a website. My son was in college, and a friend of his was doing a little business in his dorm room setting up websites. Just what I needed. And I had this great idea – selling kitchen tools and gadgets. I got the website up, invested hundreds (at least it wasn’t thousands) of dollars in inventory, and was ready to become a millionaire. I sold some cookie sheets on eBay, but not much traffic came to the website, and that whole thing ended up making less money than selling matchbooks and menus. Eventually I shut down the website, donated the inventory to a Kiwanis Club for a project, and went back to the drawing board. I had a few pieces to the internet puzzle, but I was still somewhat frustrated and running out of time at the County, but unwilling to give up. I began searching for yet another way to make money online. It had never occurred to me to turn my quilting into a business. I wasn't a pattern designer, and I knew nobody would pay enough for a quilt to make it worth my time. Besides - don't most quilters give their quilted treasures away?
Finally, a Profitable Discovery Then, one Saturday I attended a workshop, hired a coach, and discovered that I was missing some critical pieces to this internet puzzle. Once he helped me put the final pieces into the puzzle, the drawing board once again came alive. And this time, the results became productive. Within 6 months, I had my website up, selling a product, and providing information to quilters around the world. In November 2004 when www.How-to-Quilt.com went live, I began with zero customers, zero newsletter subscribers, and zero internet friends as partners. And I was on my way. Or so I thought. After 3 months, I realized that there was still something wrong. All of the internet marketers talk about putting up a website, getting traffic and selling tons of stuff. Well, I had the website and some traffic, but wasn't selling tons of stuff. I had sales, but they still weren't enough to pay my bills. And my bank account was looking rather empty. I spent thousands of dollars attending workshops, seminars, trade shows, and online training searching for the missing pieces. I read books, listened to CDs, and watched DVDs picking up bits and pieces here and there, trying to get all of the puzzle pieces to fit together. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the last few missing pieces were stitched in and now, my business is generating 6 figures a year. While I know that doesn’t impress the big internet marketers of the world who make 50 gazillion dollars in 10 seconds (because they have a friend who has a customer list of 7 million), the fact is those stats are pretty darn good. And - my online business is run completely out of my house doing something I know a lot about and love to do - helping quilters all around the world make beautiful quilts to share with their family and friends. No business overhead, no investment in machines or equipment, no inventory, no hassle. My hours, my working conditions, my break times. And, I get to make quilts and teach others how to make them, too! What could be better than that? I’m not going to tell you that I work 3 hours a week to get what I have. I work plenty, but when my dad needed me to be with him and my mom needs me to help her, I have the flexibility to help them, and do my work at a different time of day or different day of the week. And I don’t have to explain myself to a boss and beg for time off. “That’s a nice story,” you say. “But I don’t think I can do that.” The thing is, I wasn’t sure I could either, initially. But with some experience under my belt, I realized that there is a formula for what I am doing.
