Tiny Doors ATL | Atlanta, GA
Ten years ago, artist Karen Anderson Singer, aka Tiny Doors ATL, began designing and placing seven-inch doors in various neighborhoods in Atlanta. The doors have become a magical viral sensation; her online doors map has been visited more than a million times! On this whimsical scavenger hunt, you’ll search for 28 miniature doors hidden in plain sight.
These miniature, intricately designed scenes are tucked away in various neighborhoods, from the BeltLine to Little Five Points. Each door is unique and well-maintained, and the artist often visits to make seasonal updates.
Pinecone Pathways | Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and Aberdeen, NC
The Pinecone Pathways scavenger hunt in North Carolina also went viral in its first year. In partnership with glassmakers from StarWorks, 100 glass pinecones are hidden along 32 selected trails throughout Moore County each spring. Each pinecone is a unique little piece of art made by local artists, and the hunt often comes with clues to make the search more exciting. They’ve seen searchers come from all over the country, and some hike more than 100 miles in search of a coveted pinecone!
The Pinecone Pathways program returns from March 21 to April 22, 2025, and they also just announced a special autumn edition! Renowned Seagrove Potter Crystal King will handmake 30 pottery pinecones to be hidden along selected trails on October 19. The 30 orange and pine green “Crystal Cones”Β will be individually stamped and authenticated by the artist. Don’t miss one of these two upcoming pinecone hunts!
Mice on Main | Greenville, SC
Greenville is nothing short of magical for many reasons, and searching for the Mice on a Main is a fun way to explore downtown. Prompted byΒ the children’s book Goodnight Moon, a local high school student placed these little bronze sculptures in 2000. They have become beloved residents with their own board game, t-shirts, children’s book, and scavenger hunt.
Bootful Wimberly | Wimberly, TX
The Bootiful Wimberley scavenger hunt is a delightful way to explore this charming Texas Hill Country town. Wimberley is dotted with 50 giant, colorful boot sculptures, each painted by a local artist and reflective of some aspect of their life or Texan culture. The hunt involves finding all these “bootiful” boots scattered around town, and they’re not hard to miss! It’s a fun, family-friendly way to get to know the town’s artistic spirit while exploring local shops, parks, and scenic spots.
Tree Spirit Hunt | Saint Simons, GA
The Tree Spirit Hunt on St. Simons Island, GA, is a charming scavenger hunt that’s artsy in a whole new way. Instead of adding art to his town, local artist Keith Jennings carves his art into trees. Scattered across the island, you’ll find mysterious faces carved into ancient oak trees, known as Tree Spirits. The carvings pay homage to the island’s maritime history and the lives of those who sailed on the island’s legendary oak-built ships.
Photo ops abound as you find these hidden faces along your island stroll. It’s a unique blend of art and nature that makes exploring St. Simons even more enchanting. We’ve got an extra credit opportunity here, folks! On the unofficial “Whale Trail” hunt, try to find multiple bronze whale sculptures designed by local artists throughout St. Simons Island.
Lucky Duck Scavenger Hunt | Huntsville, AL
& Trains on Main | Madison, AL
The Lucky Duck Scavenger Hunt in Huntsville is a fun and quirky way to explore Rocket City. Armed with your handy clue card, you’ll search for 15 bronze duck sculptures hidden around downtown. Each duck has its own personality and story, making the hunt even more entertaining for kids and kids at heart. Plus, it’s free to participate, and you’ll discover some cool spots around the city you might have otherwise missed!
Nearby, Madison’s got an extra scavenger hunt for you. This time, you’re finding the Trains on Main in the town’s historic downtown area. This self-guided hunt uses the clue card to find eight bronze train sculptures hidden in different spots along Main Street.
These little trains nod to Madison’s railroad history and make for a fun adventure for families, train enthusiasts, or anyone who enjoys a side of local history with their stroll. The hunt is free and comes with a prize at the end, too.
Appalachian Quilt Trail | Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia
You’ve likely noticed beautiful painted quilt patterns on barns and other structures.Β ThousandsΒ of barn quilts are scattered across the country, part of a larger movement to celebrate rural communities’ cultural heritage and artistry. The Appalachian Quilt Trail spans several states in the Appalachian region, primarily in parts of Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia.
One of the trail’s most well-known sections is in Northeast Tennessee, particularly in areas like Johnson County, where you can spot many lovely barn quilts dotting the countryside. Parts of Western North Carolina and Southwestern Virginia also feature their own segments of the trail, each with unique patterns and local stories.
As you drive through the scenic countryside and soak up this open-air gallery, count your findings, and don’t hesitate to pop into some spots to talk with the owners.
