If you are looking for warm hospitality blended with vibrant city life, there are plenty of things to do in Little Rock, Arkansas! Perched on the banks of the Arkansas River, the state capital offers visitors a rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. We’ve got suggestions for a weekend, but this merely skims the surface. After only one weekend in Little Rock, you will want to keep exploring this Southern beauty.
Welcome to Little Rock!
Upon arrival, check into the Capital Hotel. Described as “the front porch of Little Rock,” the historic destination has been a prominent fixture in Little Rock for over 140 years, opening its doors in 1876. Supremely elegant yet oh-so-welcoming, the hotel prides itself on its “Southern Comfortable” approach to service, providing personal attention and care. Visitors rave about the comfortable, spacious rooms and high-end amenities.
Explore the Arts
As the crown jewel of Little Rock’s cultural scene, the Arkansas Museum of Fine Art (AMFA) offers visual art exhibitions, performing arts spaces, and fun social areas like a cultural living room. Located in the heart of MacArthur Park, this premier institution layers an impressive collection of traditional, contemporary, and 3D art in open and airy galleries.
AMFA emphasizes diversity, featuring works by Black, Native American, Asian American, and Latin American artists, as well as giving equal representation to women artists. Whether exploring the permanent collection, marveling at an exhibition, or enjoying one of the engaging programs, a visit to the Arkansas Museum of Fine Art promises a memorable experience in Little Rock.
If you have time, Little Rock has several other museums worth visiting, including the Historic Arkansas Museum, Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, Museum of Discovery, and Old State House Museum.
Explore the Neighborhoods
Eclectic and cool SoMa (South Main) began as an accidental neighborhood after a major freeway was built through the middle of Little Rock’s Main Street. It’s not a huge area, but you’ll find tons of charm in these few blocks. Start at ESSE, one of only three purse museums in the world. This fascinating little venue is the very definition of a hidden gem — small, sparkling, and full of wonder!
As you stroll through SoMa, you’ll find lots of delightful places to visit:
- The Green Corner Store is Arkansas’ first eco-lifestyle store with local, organic, and sustainable goods.
- Moxy Modern Mercantile boasts an eclectic mix of vintage, industrial, and modern furnishings, quirky gifts, small-batch greeting cards, and fresh stationery.
- Admire the sculptures in The Bernice Garden. If you visit in season on a Sunday, check out the local treats at the farmers’ market.
- For treats, Press Waffle Co. specializes in fully customizable authentic Belgian waffles, savory waffle creations, and locally roasted coffee, while Loblolly Creamery Scoop Shop will satisfy cravings for small-batch, handcrafted ice cream.
- For happy hour, take a tour of Rock Town Distillery, followed by cocktails made with Rock Town spirits.
The hip and happening River Market District is the centerpiece of Little Rock’s downtown. By day, the market hall offers an exciting mix of food vendors sure to entice the senses. In the evening, you’ll find anything from a one-man band in the River Market pavilion, local and regional artists at a Jazz in the Park concert, or a national act in the outdoor amphitheater.
Nearby, Riverfront Park covers 39 delightful acres along the bank of the Arkansas River. The park is a lovely place to stroll, filled with walks, terraces, plazas, sitting areas, playgrounds, a sculpture garden, and fountains.
Plan to spend some time in The Heights, another Little Rock neighborhood known for charming local shops and a variety of delicious dining options. Trendy and charming, the area is full of high-end boutiques, such as Eggshells Kitchen Co. (a kitchen store for foodies), Bella Boutique (an upscale gift shop), and WordsWorth Books (a local, independent bookstore).
Explore the Cuisine
Little Rock’s food scene stands out among Southern cities by offering unique local specialties and diverse cuisine, often with a farm-to-table focus. Visitors can find everything from traditional Southern fare to international cuisines like Indian and Japanese.
To fuel up for your day, head downstairs for breakfast. The Capital Hotel’s One Eleven has a wonderful menu featuring lighter and heartier fare. (SB tip: Try the Avocado Toast with an added poached egg — it’s perfection!) Other yummy breakfast and coffee spots to check out are Nexus Coffee and Creative and Community Bakery.
Lunch will most likely depend on where you find yourself, so we have suggestions based on the neighborhoods you may explore. In SoMa, treat yourself to BCW (Bread Cheese Wine). This open, airy, and welcoming restaurant focuses on the ultimate comfort food: grilled cheese sandwiches.
No worries if you are in the mood for a fresh, tasty salad or a yummy shareable — that’s on the menu, too. Pair it with a glass (or two) of wine or a refreshing cocktail.
The Ottenheimer Market Hall is a great idea for lunch in the River Market District; you’ll be spoiled for choice with various cuisines on hand. In the Heights, check out Heights Taco and Tamale or Boulevard Bread Company.
When evening rolls around, wind down with dinner at Park Grill, perfect after spending the afternoon at AMFA. The food is delightful, and the service is impeccable. If you’d rather head back to home base, the Capital Bar & Grill at The Capital Hotel offers comfort food at its finest — and deservedly popular cocktails for before or after-dinner fun.
In SoMa, check out the farm-to-table menu at The Root Cafe (open for lunch and dinner, too). Newly opened in the Heights, George’s serves up classic Italian flair with a local twist and paired with a signature selection of cocktails. Plus, a speakeasy named Barnaby is tucked around back. How fun is that?
Explore History
