The temperatures may still read summer well into October, but fall has officially arrived in the Magic City! From pumpkin patches to haunted houses, we are ready to delve into everything autumnal. Whether you celebrate the start of October with gourds, ghouls, or a little of both, we have you covered with Birmingham’s best fall festivities.

All of these attractions are within a short drive of the Birmingham metro area, making this the perfect list to have on hand when fall inspiration strikes.

PUMPKIN PATCHES

Griffin Farms

A weekend visit to Griffin Farms is a must-do this fall. Their pumpkin patch kicks off on October 5 and continues on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month. Your $10 admission ticket includes access to hay rides, rock walls, zip lining, the animal barn, and much more! Griffin Farms has on-site food trucks during pumpkin season, so you can spend a whole day soaking in the fall feels.

Helena Hollow

A visit to Helena Hollow will have you reminiscing about your favorite autumnal childhood memories. On Fridays and Saturdays in October, a day pass gives you access to more than 25 festive activities and attractions, from hay runs to barn slides to duck creek races and beyond. Many of these activities are geared toward young children, so Helena Hollow is perfect for a birthday party or event!

Old Baker Farm

From September 28 to October 31, the Baker family opens their historic farm to the public for pumpkin patch season. Many Birmingham locals grew up taking a fall field trip here with their schools, but we can attest that a “field trip” to Old Baker farm is a hit at any age! From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays, and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, you can head over to pick your perfect pumpkin.

Old Baker Farm also hosts several festivals throughout the autumnal season, so mark your calendar for Cowboy Weekend, Alabama Living History Weekend, and  Festival Weekend. Be sure to visit the farm animals and try not to get lost in the corn maze on your way out!

Penton Farms

Penton Farms may be a bit of a trek from the Birmingham metro area, but we promise it is worth the journey. The fourth-generation family farm produces fruits and vegetables year-round, but October is something special. Visitors can choose from over 50 varieties of pumpkins, as well as corn stalks, hay bales, and mums.

Your admission ticket grants you one pumpkin from their fields and access to farm activities like wagon rides, a “cow train,” and a corn maze!

The Great Pumpkin Patch

September 28 marks the start of the Halloween Festival season at the Great Pumpkin Patch. Not only can you find your perfect pumpkin for carving or decorating, but there are a whole slew of family-friendly activities to enjoy. Your admission ticket gains you access to wagon rides, inflatables, the petting zoo, and the country store.

4D Farm

4D Farm has an amazing pumpkin patch and a lengthy roster of family-friendly farm festivities. Fly down the tubing slides, mine for treasures in the gem mine, test your balance on the mechanical bull, and be sure to catch a pig race! 4D Farm also has seven on-site restaurants, so you can enjoy farm-fresh food before or after your fall frolicking.

HAUNTED ATTRACTIONS

Atrox Factory

Atrox Factory has quite the reputation for being a hard-core haunt. It is the largest indoor haunted attraction in the Southeast and one of the most popular haunted attractions in the United States. The entire facility gets a refresh every January, so there are new spooky scenes each year. If you’re seeking a terror-induced adrenaline high, Atrox Factory will deliver!

Conjure

Location: East Birmingham

Get ready for a terrifyingly fun experience benefiting a great cause. Birmingham’s newest haunt — Conjure Haunted Attraction — features a bone-chilling storyline following the perils of Ouija boards. Visitors begin the experience by entering a home, assuming the role of kids playing with a board, and then suffering the consequences. But meddling with the Ouija board comes at a price.

Proceeds from the attraction will benefit local nonprofit, Andrew’s Place, a refuge for domestic violence survivors!

The Haunted Chicken House

If you’re looking for a unique haunted house experience, the Haunted Chicken House may be perfect. Try to make it through the horrifying human-sized chicken pen as mutant chickens chase you the whole way. You can also hop on the “Haunted Hayride.” True thrill-seekers will love the newest addition — the Crazy Train. Patrons fly at over 60 mph through the haunted woods and end with a jump off a 12-foot cliff.

Warehouse 31

Location: Pelham

Warehouse 31 has three haunted experiences to choose from, so there is something for every white-knuckler. “Rigamortis,” the traditional haunted house experience, is packed with 50 scenes of terror. The 3D experience transports brave participants into the maddening mind of “Lenny Graves,” a once beloved butcher whose psychotic break resulted in widespread horror.

If you truly want to put your survival skills to the test, try your hand at the escape room!
