Although she moved quite a few times in childhood (thirteen to be exact!), Christian Penn has called Memphis home since 1997. After attending college at Lee University outside Chattanooga, she settled into teaching computer programming in the 901. When the pandemic struck, Christian found an outlet in candle making. What started as a comforting hobby grew, and she eventually started selling her delightfully scented creations at the Downtown Farmers Market and local festivals. Today, you can find her candles and home design expertise at Penn Home & Design Co. Meet our creative new FACE of Memphis, Christian Penn!Â
First, tell us about the concept of Penn Home & Design.
We have brought home goods and home design together in a unique way that fits well together. We love the idea that our homes can be inviting and welcoming — a place to find peace and rest for whatever the next day brings.
The concept of the shop came from our desire for our customers to have access to our candles throughout the week (not just at festivals). The shop also allows us to host candle-pouring classes and bring people together in a new way. And it is a wonderful space to meet with our design clients and walk them through project renderings and material selections.
What do you find most rewarding about home design?
I love seeing a space with all its obstacles and boundaries and imagining a new way for it to function well for the family that uses it each day. I’m honestly drawn to older homes that have all the history and character just waiting to be brought back out in a fresh way.
What is your own favorite candle scent and why?
My favorite candle that I make is Coco Loco (coconut milk, sandalwood, and cedar). It’s such a warm and cozy scent! I pour hundreds a month and never get tired of it.
What did you learn along the way that helped you run your own business?
I have always loved connecting with people. In teaching, it was with the students. As a business owner, it’s the customers and clients who come into the shop each day. I want our customers to feel a sense of warmth when they step through the doors. It’s not just about getting a sale. We want to be in community with our customers.
Switching gears a little, what do you love most about living in Memphis?
I love that Memphis feels like a big, small town. You can be in a room with 20 strangers and somehow find a familiar face in the crowd. The community of artists in Memphis is a beautiful collection of people who all support each other and show up for one another at different shows and events. I also have an incredible church family at Mercy Hill Church in Midtown. They have shown up in big ways to support my small business.
Where can we find you when you aren’t working?
I’m in my backyard garden with my ducks, chickens, and a goose named Lucy. Something about working with my hands in the dirt makes my mind slow down, and things become clear.
What is your best piece of advice?
More is not always more. Sometimes, we need to slow down and be content with what we have right in front of us. We overload our schedules, thinking we should always do or have more. But sometimes, doing and having less is just what we need.
Aside from faith, family, and friends, what are three things you can’t live without?
Music – I have a library of eclectic playlists.
Good food – I love to cook and try new recipes.
Candles – I usually have four or more burning in my house at all times.
