Well, this is my story - - - and I started from my kitchen.

When my ex-husband and I split up, my income was barely adequate to support one person, let alone enough to support my two kids and me. The few hundred dollars of child support and the $131 per year (yes, per year - it isn't a typo!) in alimony helped a little, but every month was a new adventure in paying bills and juggling credit card payments and balances.

For two years, as I watched my kids grow and flourish, my debt was growing and flourishing right along with them.

Eventually I was able to get a job making more money, but it still wasn’t enough. Five years later, with increasing debt and two kids in college, I was handed a layoff notice from the County of San Diego, as a result of a budget cut. Fortunately the clock ran for 3 more months.

In one way, I was relieved, since I was miserable with my boss and my job. But I didn’t have many options.  

Transferring to a different department was possible, but would have resulted in a decrease in pay of 30%.  The household math wasn’t working already, and with a 30% decrease in pay, I would have had to move back in with my parents. And, at 56 years old, that was not an option.

So I started looking around. First I looked at other companies, but I was sick of working at a boring job I hated just to pay the bills, and there wasn't anything very exciting out there.

Then one day, a spam email popped into my email box. It was an ad for a program teaching how to make money online.

In desperation, I decided to give it a whirl.

Within a short time, I learned how to sell on eBay. Within a few weeks, I was making a few hundred dollars a week on eBay, selling collectible matchbooks and menus - all out of my kitchen. (Amazing as that sounds!)

But, as you can imagine, finding collectible matchbooks and old menus isn’t like turning on a faucet and watching the water gush out. It became clear that to really make some money, I would need to invest thousands of dollars in someone’s matchbook or menu collection, then spend hundreds of hours sorting, taking pictures and then posting the auctions on eBay.

Doable, to be sure. But the hourly rate was less than minimum wage, I didn’t have thousands of dollars to invest in matchbooks that might not sell, and a few hundred dollars a week wasn't enough to pay for rent, let alone food, clothes, and college for the kids.

Then I ran into someone who talked about setting up a website to sell products in addition to selling them on eBay. That sounded like a good idea, but I didn’t know anything about setting up a website.

By then, my son was in college, and a friend of his was doing a little business in his dorm room setting up websites. Just what I needed.

And I had this great idea – selling kitchen tools and gadgets. I got the website up, invested hundreds (at least it wasn’t thousands) of dollars in inventory, and was ready to become a millionaire.

I sold some cookie sheets on eBay, but not much traffic came to the website, and that whole thing ended up making less money than selling matchbooks and menus. Eventually I shut down the website, donated the inventory to a Kiwanis Club for a project, and went back to the drawing board.

I had a few pieces to the internet puzzle, but I was still somewhat frustrated, running out of time at the County, but unwilling to give up. I began searching for yet another way to make money online.

Finally, a Profitable Discovery

Then, one Saturday I attended a workshop about setting up a website, hired a coach, and discovered that I was missing some critical pieces to this internet puzzle. Once I put the final pieces in place, the drawing board once again came alive. And this time, the results became massively productive.

Within 6 months, I had my website up, selling a product, and providing information to quilters around the world.

Although I was ready to make a fortune, the fortune wasn't finding me. Using the strategies I learned, my business grew, but then it stalled out, and I ran out of things to try.

So, I began the search once again - investing thousands of dollars and hours trying different systems, styles of websites, marketing techniques, and anything else under the sun.

I learned how to make money setting up websites that had tons of articles and made money just from Google ads. Yes, that made money - my best month was $12.56, which didn't come close to paying back the $4,995.00 plus $97 per month I invested to learn that brilliant strategy. It's funny now, but I wasn't laughing at the time.

I signed up for a monthly report teaching about all different kinds of internet strategies - buying and selling domain names, building outrageously expensive homes and selling them online, setting up catalog sites selling drawer knobs. Fun stuff, and I learned a lot, but it didn't exactly translate into a thriving online quilting business. And I can't say for sure that it put the $$4,206.24 that I invested directly into my bank account.

And there were more. I don't even want to add up the tens of thousands of dollars I have invested in my practical online education.

When I finally got connected with a marketing company and began to understand and implement the real marketing that was necessary behind the website, I turned the corner and my business took off.

In November 2004 when www.How-to-Quilt.com went live, I began with zero customers, zero newsletter subscribers, and zero internet friends as partners. And, just a short 3 years later, I have more than 39,000 newsletter subscribers and sales of 6 figures annually.

While I know that doesn’t impress the big internet marketers of the world who make 50 gazillion dollars in 10 seconds (because they have a friend who has a customer list of 7 million), the fact is those stats are pretty darn good. You might be happy with them, wouldn't you?

And - my online business is run completely out of my house doing something I know a lot about and love to do.

No business overhead, no investment in machines or equipment, no inventory, no hassle. My hours, my working conditions, my break times. And, I get to make quilts! What could be better than that?

I’m not going to tell you that I work 3 hours a week to get what I have. I work plenty, but when my dad needed me to be with him and my mom needs me to help her, I have the flexibility to help them, and do my work at a different time of day or different day of the week.

And I don’t have to explain myself to a boss and beg for time off.

“That’s a nice story,” you say. “But I don’t think I can do that.”

The thing is, I wasn’t sure I could either, initially. But now with some experience and success under my belt, I realized that there is a formula for what I am doing. And, just like learning a step-by-step formula for making a quilt, you can easily learn this formula for making money online with a quilting business.

Why Would I Reveal Exactly How to Start a Profitable Quilting Business Online?

For the past two years, I have attended conferences with other quilting business owners, who are amazed that I am making money with my online quilting business. (And, frankly, a little jealous!)

"But, how do I know that quilters want to make money online?" I asked.

"Everybody wants to make money,"  he said. Why don't you ask them?"

And so I did. A few months ago, you may have responded to a survey asking if you might be interested in learning more about starting a online quilting business. 986 quilters said they were interested! I was shocked.

"But, what will I teach them?" I asked.

"Teach them everything. All the pieces to the puzzle. Your formula. Everything."

"But, if I give away all my secrets, won't that hurt my business?" I asked.

My friend just smiled and said "But, Penny, it's about helping other quilters get started in their business, and avoid the pain suffered early on as they grow their business. I thought about it for a long time, and after some prodding, nudging, begging, and pleading, I decided to put together a small gathering where I could share what I have learned with a few of my quilting friends and thus The Quilting Business on a Shoestring Budget Seminar was hatched.

"Okay, Penny. This sounds really good, but I hear that most new businesses fail within the first few years."

Yes, I have heard that. Statistics show that about 50 percent of businesses fail in their first year and an even greater percentage fail within five years. Many reports also state the top reasons for this include: insufficient capital, poor credit arrangements, bad location, competition, market turndowns, or just plain lack of interest.

Yes, as amazing as that is, many businesses close because their owners decide that they don't like the business they are in. That couldn't happen when you start a business doing something you truly love to do, like quilting.

This is my 4th year in business, and I am experiencing growth in both sales and profits – regardless of the so-called recession in the US. To be exact, my business grew 386% last year over 2006, and more than 69.5% additional growth this year - so far! In this "bad" economy. And I love what I do!

There are several reasons for my success, and most of them are directly related to the market I chose to enter (which was based on research methods I shared with my quilting friends at the seminar), the products I choose to sell (strategies which I also shared - and you will see and hear), and the fact that selling online, especially in quilting, is an international endeavor – making the shifting sand in the US economy an insignificant factor in the success of my business.

Couple that with the fact that there are more than 27 million quilters in the US alone, and that number is growing every year. Because many quilters are Baby Boomers and are preparing for retirement, you can count on more money being spent on their favorite pastime - quilting.

And, that doesn't include quilters abroad or people just learning how to quilt. The bottom line is that this is a growing market, and quilters are passionate about their craft, and they have time and money to spend on their quilting. With the information you get, you will know why some websites make money and others don't make a dime, so yours will be one of the big winners, and your web-guy will be asking for your help in designing websites for his other clients.

What your website needs to get high Search Engine Rankings so you don't have to spend money advertising. The Search Engine Optimization companies can't believe that my www.How-to-Quilt.com site ranks #1 in Google for all of my main keywords. As a matter of fact, they are asking me how I did it! Use my secret techniques, your site will be #1, too - without spending thousands of dollars with Google or Search Engine Optimization companies.

How to collect money from buyers in the most convenient, least expensive way possible, putting more money in your pocket. Oh, the things new business folks don't think about. But, it's not your fault - - you don't know the questions to ask, just as I didn't know when I started. My web-guy gave me some advice about taking payments that was completely wrong, and it cost me untold dollars when I started my online quilting business. With this information, you will know how to avoid those mistakes and set up your shopping cart so your customers are happy to pay you.

How to use email to keep your subscribers informed and buying. You will learn specific techniques that will put dollars in your pockets while keeping your customers happy and coming back for more. As a matter of fact, they will send your information to their friends, and increase your business for you.

How to write compelling pages on your website and killer listings for eBay so potential buyers can't wait to get your product into their hands. Most sellers leave money on the table because they don't know how to describe their product. I will teach you what you need to say to let potential buyers know that they want your product. Several of my webpages have been critiqued by the best internet marketers who made minor suggestions - like "change the color of the font."

How to track your website traffic so you know where to spend your time developing more traffic and more sales. You could spend thousands of dollars tracking your traffic, or you could use a simple tool that will tell you exactly where your traffic is coming from so you can keep it coming.

My private list of resources, that I don't share with anyone, with products you can re-sell for 2-3 times what you paid. I discovered early on that most distributors want to work with only large accounts, and when you are getting started, you probably aren't going to invest thousands of dollars in one product to re-sell, especially when you aren't even sure it will sell. How to automate your online business so it can grow and exceed your wildest dreams. You could spend thousands of dollars and years of frustration figuring out what you can automate, what you must automate, and how to get it done. Choose the wrong systems, and your business could turn into a nightmare. If you do too much by hand, you will drown in the work and make no money. I have made the mistakes, and will share my resources with you, so are making money and keeping it in your bank account with the minimum amount of work.
